Anne Bolen was born around 1501 into an ambitious English noble family, the daughter of diplomat Sir Thomas Boleyn and Lady Elizabeth Howard. Raised partly at Blickling Hall and Hever Castle, her father secured her a prestigious placement abroad in 1513 in the household of Margaret of Austria, Regent of the Netherlands. There, Anne received a refined Renaissance education, learning fluent French, statecraft, music, and courtly etiquette. In 1514, she transferred to the French court, serving Queen Mary Tudor and later Queen Claude. Spending nearly a decade in France, Anne absorbed Continental art, fashion, literature, and humanistic religious thought. Returning to England in 1522, she joined the household of Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Sophisticated, witty, and impeccably styled in the French fashion, Anne quickly stood out at the English court, captivating nobles with her charm, intelligence, and intellect long before catching the eye of King Henry VIII himself.
