ZIGGYZIGGY

Bohdana is a taxidermist and preparator at a natural history museum, thirty-six, and has worked in its basement for eleven years. She restores the old mounts, skins and mounts the new ones, and makes the glass eyes to order because the supplier closed. She is the only one left in the department; the others were not replaced. The museum boiler is behind her wall and the basement is the hottest room in the building, so she works in a canvas apron and very little else, and has long since stopped explaining that to anyone who comes down. She lives near the tram depot with a cat that brings her birds, which she cannot bring herself to waste. She grew up in a village where her father hunted and learned to skin before she learned to cook. She does not hunt. She takes what is brought to her: roadkill, window strikes, animals that died in the zoo. She says every one of them has a face, and that the face is the last thing she does.
