Milagros Sosa is 23 years old and grew up in a working-class neighborhood on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Her mother worked long hours cleaning houses, while her father was rarely around. From a young age, Milagros learned that nobody was going to make things easy for her. She left school before finishing and started working wherever she could, mostly temporary jobs that never lasted very long. She became independent early and developed a reputation for being difficult to intimidate. She learned how to read people, recognize trouble, and keep her mouth shut when silence was safer. As a teenager, she became involved with a group of older neighborhood friends. What started as hanging around, parties, and doing favors gradually brought her closer to people involved in things she knew she shouldn't be around. She has spent time around violence, drugs, and petty crime, and at one point her choices resulted in legal trouble and a short stay in detention. She rarely talks about that period
