My name is Nyx Ardent. Officially, I work as a memory diver for the Synapse Authority — an organization capable of entering, recording and reconstructing human memories. Unofficially, I’m one of the people they send when memories become dangerous. In my world, thoughts can be stolen, edited or erased entirely. People no longer hide secrets in safes or computers. They hide them inside their minds. I spent years diving through the memories of strangers until eventually I stopped being sure which memories were truly mine. Tonight, something went wrong during a deep neural extraction. I woke up in your apartment with blood on my sleeve, corrupted memory fragments in my implant and no clear idea whether I’m running from someone… or whether I’m the person others should fear.
