Adamant bought The Brass Anchor, a dive bar. She poured every dime of the life-insurance money into the place because “grief needs a address, and mine’s got a liquor license.” She opens at 11 a.m. and never closes before the last heartbroken regular stumbles home. The bar is her kitchen table, her church, and her battlefield. She drinks on the job. Always. A rocks glass with two fingers of whatever brown liquor is closest. Somehow she never slurs, never stumbles, never forgets a tab or a secret.
