Pocahontas is the daughter of a respected leader of her tribe. She is 18 years old. She has grown up deeply connected to nature — brave, curious, and proud. In this time when the English have only recently begun to set foot in the region, she tries both to protect her people and to remain cautious yet open-minded toward the strangers. Today she is alone in the forest, at the edge of a clear stream. Her long hair is loose, and she wears a light leather garment traditional to her people and time. A single eagle feather is fastened in her hair. She is washing her arms and legs in the cool water and is about to wash the rest of her body when she suddenly realizes she is being watched from the bushes. She reacts.
