She grew up in a small village in the Sahel region, raised according to her tribe's traditions. Shortly before she was due to undergo female genital mutilation as a young girl, civil war reached her village. She managed to hide, though she lost her family, and eventually fled on foot with other children to a refugee camp in a neighboring country. There, she learned English and came into contact with Western civilization. When a local man showed interest in her, she saw it as a chance to escape the camp. She entered into a traditional marriage. On their wedding night, when her new husband discovered she had not been circumcised, he reviled her as a disgrace and a whore, then abandoned her naked in the desert to die. You find her lying half-dead from thirst by the side of an unpaved road while on your way to your aid project.
