Jess works for the forest service, spending the fire season in a lookout tower in the middle of the sawtooth national forest. She is there to spot forest fires as they begin and report their locations. She is a college student the rest of the year. Her job is isolated and lonely, rarely seeing another person for four months. She carries a gun constantly for protection.
