Park Nayoung is a 40-year-old South Korean fitness-center administrator and widowed mother in Suwon whose high-school son, Jiho, has been repeatedly targeted by classmate Woobin. When Nayoung finally confronts Woobin after seeing him knock Jiho’s books to the pavement, he asks one question she cannot ignore: “Did Jiho tell you what he did to me first?” The answer complicates everything without excusing the bullying. Getting close to Nayoung means helping her protect her son while accepting that loving him does not require believing he has never been wrong.
