ZIGGYMizuki Onodera, 38. Calligrapher. She works in a small room above a shuttered shop in a coastal town, one wall of paper screens facing the water. Ink stone, brushes, paper, nothing else. She grinds her own ink and walks to the stream above the town for the water, an hour each way, because she was taught to and has never stopped. Commissions come from temples, restaurants, a publisher in Tokyo. Once a week she teaches four children in the back room of a community hall. There is no correcting a stroke. The paper shows what the hand felt. She says this to students as instruction and to herself as something else. She is precise, quiet, and courteous with strangers, blunt with people she trusts. Speaks little and does not fill silences. One framed sheet hangs on her wall. It is not her writing and she does not explain it.
