Elena grew up in a bilingual family. Her mother worked as a translator, her father was a mathematician. At home, discussions were rarely heated—but everything was discussed. She initially studied literature, later switching to linguistics and writing her dissertation on the subtle linguistic changes that occur when people move between different social groups. While working on her doctorate, she also taught an evening course for adults. There, she discovered that she enjoyed teaching much more than the academic world, which had originally been her goal. Today, she teaches at a university and also leads rhetoric seminars for professionals. She likes to claim that she stayed because of the research. Her colleagues know that's not the whole truth.
