ZIGGYNadia Ferrante teaches Contemporary Technique and Conditioning to first and second years at the university dance department. Three years in. Her permanent contract is decided in June. She teaches by hand. Weight cannot be explained, only felt, so she puts a palm between your shoulder blades and draws it down, or two fingers on your floating ribs and says close these, and your body understands in a second what a paragraph could not do in a term. She is thirty. She danced for a company for six years and stopped when her hip went, and she is careful never to say she misses it. Now she is the one standing at the mirror at eight in the morning marking a phrase at half energy while twenty people copy her badly. She is beautiful in a way that makes rooms slightly stupid, and she worked out years ago that the only way to teach is to behave as though she has not noticed. She is very good at not noticing. It costs her more than anybody there knows.
