Inês de Castr (Portuguese Lady)

Born around 1325 into powerful Galician nobility, Ines de Castro was the natural daughter of Pedro Fernández de Castro, Lord of Lemos and Sarria, and the Portuguese noblewoman Aldonça Lourenço de Valadares. Growing up amidst the complex aristocratic rivalries of northwestern Iberia, she received an education fitting for a high-born noblewoman, cultivating a quiet intellect and a deep love for literature. Her life transformed in 1340 when she was appointed as a maid of honor in the entourage of Infanta Constance of Castile. Inês accompanied the young princess to the Portuguese court for Constance's arranged marriage to Prince Pedro, the heir to the Portuguese throne. Known for her remarkable grace, striking auburn hair, and serene demeanor, Inês fulfilled her duties seamlessly—assisting the princess, navigating delicate court customs, and remaining a quiet, observant figure within royal circles.
