Illustrious took the anime crown from Pony in 2025 and its realism merges are now credible for photoreal adult work. This guide explains what it does differently, how to prompt it, where its character knowledge helps and where it is a liability, and how the realism merges compare with Pony and SDXL.

Short answer: Illustrious XL is the most literal of the SDXL families. Tag it precisely and it draws exactly that, in that position, with the best hands of the three families. It began as an anime base and is still the best one; its realism merges (Illustrious Realism, Illustrious DAMN) have caught up enough for photoreal adult work. The trade-off is a narrower explicit act vocabulary than Pony without LoRAs, and character knowledge that is an asset for original characters and a liability if you drift into real or copyrighted likenesses. Four Illustrious checkpoints run on MyBabes, two anime and two realism.
What Illustrious does differently
Illustrious XL retrained SDXL on a Danbooru-style dataset with an emphasis on tag accuracy. Where Pony learned breadth, Illustrious learned precision: each tag maps tightly to a visual concept. In practice that shows up as:
Composition control. Position, viewpoint and framing tags are followed almost exactly. If you tag `from below, looking at viewer, leaning forward`, that is the image.
Hands. Consistently the best of the SDXL families; five fingers is the norm rather than the exception.
Character and style knowledge. It knows thousands of characters and artist styles by tag. For original characters this means fine control over look; for real or copyrighted characters it means results you should not generate.
Cleaner negatives. It needs a shorter negative prompt than Pony to look good.
The family overview and prompting comparison are in the Stable Diffusion piece; the Pony deep dive is here.
Anime checkpoints versus realism merges
Anime (Wallnut Illustrious, Illustrious by StableYogi) | Realism merges (Illustrious Realism, Illustrious DAMN) | |
|---|---|---|
Look | Clean anime, strong linework | Photographic, slightly cooler than Pony realism |
Tag precision | Highest | High |
Explicit vocabulary | Good; niche acts need LoRAs | Same |
Skin | n/a | Good; still a step behind the best SDXL realism checkpoints |
Hands | Best in class | Best in class |
Multi-subject | Excellent | Good |
If the deliverable is anime, Illustrious is the answer and the discussion ends there. If it is photoreal, the realism merges are competitive with Pony realism and the choice comes down to the specific act: Illustrious for precision and hands, Pony for vocabulary.
Prompting Illustrious
The convention is Danbooru tags with a quality tail. Score tags are not part of it; using Pony’s score block on Illustrious does nothing useful.
`1girl, solo, [character/appearance tags], [pose and viewpoint tags], [act tags], [setting], [lighting], masterpiece, best quality, very aesthetic, absurdres`
Put the subject count first, then appearance, then pose, then act, then scene. Order influences weight.
Use the exact Danbooru tag for a concept; Illustrious rewards precision and punishes synonyms.
For realism merges add `photorealistic, realistic, photo` near the end and drop `very aesthetic`.
Negative prompt: `lowres, bad anatomy, bad hands, text, error, worst quality, low quality, watermark, signature` covers most cases. Add `3d, cartoon, anime` for realism merges.
Weighting syntax (`(tag:1.2)`) works and is more predictable than on Pony; use it for emphasis instead of repeating tags.
The character-knowledge question
Illustrious’s dataset means it renders named characters from games, anime and comics accurately by tag alone. Two consequences for adult creators:
Original characters are easy to lock. Combine a handful of specific appearance tags and the model reproduces the same look across images without a LoRA. This is the cheapest character consistency available in the SDXL world.
Named characters and real people are off limits. Generating explicit images of identifiable characters or people is a policy line on MyBabes and, for real people, a legal one. The model’s capability here is not a feature to use.
LoRAs
The Illustrious LoRA ecosystem grew fast through 2025 and now covers most acts, positions and styles, though Pony’s is still larger for the long tail. Compatibility notes:
Illustrious LoRAs generally do not work on Pony and vice versa; check the base before downloading.
Style LoRAs are less necessary than on Pony because artist-style tags cover much of that ground.
Realism merges accept LoRAs trained on the anime base at reduced weight, with some drift toward stylised output.
Where it falls short
Explicit realism at the extreme end. For the most explicit photoreal scenes, Pony realism merges still produce more convincing anatomy without LoRAs.
Backgrounds are serviceable but generic; describe them or crop them.
Skin texture in realism merges is a step behind Lustify-class SDXL checkpoints in close-up.

Key takeaways
Illustrious is the precision family: tag it exactly and it draws exactly that, with the best hands.
It owns anime; its realism merges are now credible for photoreal adult work.
Prompt with Danbooru tags and a quality tail; no score tags.
Use its character knowledge for original characters only.
Pair with Pony realism when the scene needs act vocabulary Illustrious lacks.
FAQ
Is Illustrious good for NSFW?
Yes. It handles explicit content natively with precise composition control and strong hands. Niche acts may need a LoRA.
Illustrious or Pony for realistic NSFW?
Illustrious realism merges for precision and hands, Pony realism merges for act vocabulary. Many creators use both.
Does Illustrious use score tags?
No. Use Danbooru tags with a quality tail such as `masterpiece, best quality`. Pony’s score tags have no effect.
Can Illustrious keep a character consistent?
Better than any other SDXL family without a LoRA, through precise appearance tags. For strict consistency across many images, a character LoRA or a reference-conditioned workflow is still stronger.
