Stable Diffusion for NSFW in 2026: SDXL vs Pony XL vs Illustrious, Which Checkpoints Work, and What It Takes to Run Them

"Stable Diffusion porn" is still the most-searched phrase in adult AI imagery, and the answer has moved on from the 1.5 days. Three SDXL-derived families do the real work now. We compare them checkpoint by checkpoint, explain the prompting differences, and lay out what running them actually costs.

Short answer: Stable Diffusion is still the backbone of adult AI imagery, but “Stable Diffusion” now means three different families that share the SDXL architecture and little else. SDXL realism checkpoints give the most photographic skin. [Pony XL](/hub/models/pony-xl) merges have the widest act and pose vocabulary. Illustrious has the cleanest tag adherence and the best anime. All three are open weights with no built-in filter, all three run on a 12–24 GB GPU, and all three are running in production on MyBabes, which is where the comparison images in this article were generated.

Why “Stable Diffusion porn” is an outdated phrase

Stable Diffusion 1.5 built the adult AI image scene in 2023: small, fast, uncensored, and endlessly fine-tuned. Almost nobody generates on it today. The 2024 generation of SDXL fine-tunes overtook it on anatomy, resolution and prompt understanding, and by 2025 the scene had split into three lineages, each with its own prompting style and checkpoint ecosystem. Searching for “Stable Diffusion NSFW” and installing whatever comes up first is the most common way beginners end up with 2023-quality output.

SDXL realism checkpoints

The direct descendants of the original SDXL, fine-tuned on photographic adult data. Lustify and BigLust are the two we run.

  • Strengths. Skin texture, lighting and lens realism are the most convincing of the three families. Natural-language prompts work, which makes them the easiest family for beginners.

  • Weaknesses. Explicit act vocabulary is narrower than Pony’s; complicated poses need LoRAs. Hands are the weakest of the three. Character consistency needs a per-character LoRA.

  • Use for: photorealistic solo and softcore images, portrait-style character images, reference frames for video.

Pony XL merges

Pony Diffusion XL retrained SDXL on a huge tagged dataset that included explicit content, then the community merged it with realism models. The realism merges are what most adult creators use.

  • Strengths. It knows acts, positions and body configurations that other families have to be taught with LoRAs. Score tags (“score_9, score_8_up”) give reliable quality control. Realism merges such as CyberRealistic Pony and Pony Realism are close to SDXL on skin.

  • Weaknesses. Prompting is tag-based and unforgiving; natural sentences degrade output. A slight “rendered” look on faces in some merges. Backgrounds are weaker than SDXL.

  • Use for: explicit scenes with two or more subjects, specific acts, stylised realism.

Illustrious checkpoints

Illustrious XL retrained SDXL on Danbooru-style data with an emphasis on tag precision. It replaced Pony as the anime base in 2025 and has since spawned realism merges.

  • Strengths. The most literal tag adherence: what you tag is what you get, in the position you tagged it. Best hands of the three. Deep knowledge of characters and art styles. Realism merges (Illustrious Realism, Illustrious DAMN) have improved quickly.

  • Weaknesses. Realism still trails SDXL and the best Pony merges on skin. Less explicit act vocabulary than Pony without LoRAs.

  • Use for: anime and stylised adult art, precise multi-subject composition, anything where hands are visible.

Prompting each family

The same prompt does not work across families. The three styles, for an identical scene:

Family

Prompt style

SDXL realism

“Photo of a woman in a dim hotel room, sitting on the bed in black lingerie, looking at the camera, 85 mm, soft window light”

Pony XL

“score_9, score_8_up, score_7_up, 1girl, hotel room, sitting on bed, black lingerie, looking at viewer, dim lighting, realistic, photo”

Illustrious

“1girl, solo, hotel room, sitting, on bed, black lingerie, looking at viewer, dim lighting, masterpiece, best quality, very aesthetic”

Two rules that save hours: never mix the styles in one prompt, and use each family’s negative prompt conventions (Pony and Illustrious both rely on them; SDXL realism less so).

Electricity, plus your time curating checkpoints

The hardware bar is much lower than for video models, which is why self-hosting Stable Diffusion remains realistic for hobbyists in a way that self-hosting Wan is not. The real cost is curation: there are thousands of checkpoints and LoRAs, most are bad, and the good ones change every month.

Or use them hosted

The alternative is a platform that has done the curation and runs the checkpoints with adult content enabled. MyBabes runs all three families, twelve checkpoints at the time of writing, plus around a hundred act and style LoRAs exposed as selectable “mods”, with inpainting and upscaling on the same pipeline. The trade is control for convenience: you cannot load your own checkpoint, but you also do not maintain anything. For character consistency across images and into video, hosted wins clearly, because the character image pipeline and the video pipeline share one workflow.

Stable Diffusion versus Flux for adult images

Flux is the other open family and deserves its own comparison, which we wrote here. The short version: Flux has better prompt adherence and hands and the best character consistency tools, but its adult capability depends on fine-tunes that are still maturing. Stable Diffusion has more adult checkpoints and, at its best, better raw anatomy. Most serious workflows use both.

Related in the Lab

All three families are running in production behind the MyBabes AI porn generator, with the checkpoints and LoRA mods above selectable per image.

Key takeaways

  • “Stable Diffusion NSFW” in 2026 means SDXL realism, Pony XL or Illustrious, not SD 1.5.

  • SDXL realism for skin, Pony for act vocabulary, Illustrious for tag precision and anime.

  • Each family needs its own prompting style; mixing them degrades output.

  • Self-hosting needs a 12–24 GB GPU and ongoing curation; hosted platforms trade control for convenience and consistency.

  • All three run uncensored on MyBabes with selectable LoRA mods.

FAQ

Can Stable Diffusion make NSFW images?

Yes. The open-weights checkpoints have no built-in filter. Vendor-hosted Stable Diffusion services add their own moderation; self-hosted and adult platforms do not.

What is the best Stable Diffusion model for NSFW?

It depends on the output: SDXL realism checkpoints for photographic images, Pony XL merges for explicit multi-subject scenes, Illustrious for anime and precise composition.

Is Pony XL Stable Diffusion?

Yes. Pony Diffusion XL is a retrained SDXL model, as is Illustrious. Both are usually counted as Stable Diffusion families.

What GPU do I need for Stable Diffusion NSFW?

8 GB works slowly at 1024px; 16–24 GB is comfortable, with room for LoRAs, upscaling and inpainting.

Is Stable Diffusion better than Flux for NSFW?

Stable Diffusion has more adult checkpoints and stronger anatomy in the best ones; Flux has better prompt adherence and character consistency. Many creators use Flux for composition and Stable Diffusion for explicit detail.
